CrossTalk- It's like the US states in deed that we're willing to work with the Russians (Syria, Islamist terror generally), but that only goes but so far. "F*ck the Russians. We hope they crash and burn."
How else is one to reasonably and faithfully interpret one's actions in this case?
Islamist terror and great investment opportunity in cheap fuel from Syria is different than Ukraine and keeping al-Assad in power in said Syria.
Say what you will, but Donald Trump at least opposed the militarization of Europe.
He at least got energy and the border right.
(Even if he was wrong on supporting the FSA and al-Assad's departure in Syria in hopes of creating a Syrian remnant. It was best US policy at the time as things were getting figured out. I guess he tried his best knowing what he knew.)
American aid meant to fight al-Qaida in Syria (FSA) eventually made it into the hands of al-Qaida in Syria.
In other words, it's possible to support energy growth from Syria while incidentally supporting terror in Syria.
al-Assad was framed by the CIA for firing chemical weapons on his own people under Obama.
This was part of building a case to intervene in Syria.
We can do better.

Damascus is no more.
