The US didn't back the Taliban to weaken and draw in the Soviet Union into a bogged-down quagmire. My claim is that both the US and the USSR agreed to the fostering of Al-qaida because it furthered both sides' geopolitical goals at the time and going into the future. The brewing of a bloody "unwinnable" conflict with many lost lives was just the cost of doing business when it comes to the funding, training, and equipping of an Islamist army. As stated previously, this was achieved via the Pakistani ISI. Why did the US choose Bin Laden? His upbringing and his profile fit the part perfectly for someone who the US could use, delusional goals and all. (For example, offshoots of Al-Qaida like ISIS were formed, and were controlled to a certain extent successfully, with some collateral damage to be expected.)
